GLA Deakin Day - Session 3 Planning and Environment

This is your invitation to attend the third session of GLA's 2020 Deakin Day. Session 3 will be presented by Sarah Varney of Foley's List, and will focus on the topic  "Case update - recent VCAT decisions and changes."   Participants attending the session will be entitled to one CPD point. The session will be provided free of charge to GLA members who register for a free ticket. Zoom links and session papers will follow by email update to registered participants prior to the session. Registration will close on Wednesday, 28 October 2020. CPD certificates will be emailed the week following the sessions to registered participants.

The Geelong Law Association is pleased to announce it will be hosting an upcoming online Trivia event via zoom for its members on Friday the 11 September 2020 from 4pm. For those members who attended last years Trivia event you will recall the host we had and due to the positive feedback from the event we have engaged the same business,  XQUIZ IT, to provide this year’s Trivia via zoom for members.  The GLA has also engaged with local businesses and is pleased to offer its members four options for the upcoming Trivia event: 1. GLA Trivia - Attend only - Free 2. Wine option 1 - Red or white wine delivered to the member valued up to $30 - Ticket price $15 3. Wine option 2 - Red or white wine delivered to the member valued up to $50 - Ticket price $25 4. Wine and snacks option - Red or White wine, and cheese/chocolate platter delivered to the member, valued up to $70 - Ticket Price  $40 During these difficult times the GLA would like to give its members an opportunity to socialise while adhering to social distancing requirements. Therefore the GLA is funding the event and allowing members to participate in the event free of charge and subsidising the additional options for members. The event will be hosted via zoom and members will be placed into teams. Mobile devices will be synced using an app to allow members to answer the questions. For those members choosing one of the wine options the ticket will request your address to be included which allows for delivery of the item. It will also request you advise which type of wine you would prefer. To ensure all deliveries are made prior to the event ticket sales will close at Midnight on the 7 September 2020. We hope our members are otherwise safe and well and look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming event.

The Geelong Law Association invites members who practice in Personal Injury Law to a scheduled Zoom meeting to discuss challenges in the context of COVID-19. Given that most Personal Injury lawyers are working from home without face to face contact with clients and other practitioners, the Zoom meeting will allow them to interact about current issues within the relevant jurisdiction. The Zoom meeting is a free event and is designed for Personal Injury lawyers to remain in contact during this period. The session will go for approximately 40 minutes and will be hosted by Jaz Goddard, Associate at Maurice Blackburn.  An invitation to the Zoom meeting will be sent to members who RSVP ahead of the session. All aspects of Personal Injury Law are up for discussion such as preparing for and running conferences, mediations and hearings, and any new legislation and practice notes that have passed or been introduced this year and in light of COVID-19.  The GLA is also planning to hold further events for other practice areas.  If you are not a Personal Injury lawyer but would be interested in a session for members of your practice area, please don't hesitate to get in touch with the Committee to make a suggestion. Given that most wills and estates lawyers are working from home without face to face contact with clients and other practitioners, the Zoom meeting will allow wills and estates lawyers to interact about current issues within the wills and estates jurisdiction. The Zoom meeting is a free event and is designed for wills and estates lawyers to remain in contact during this period. The session will go for approximately 40 minutes and will be hosted by Aaron Jolly, President of the Geelong Law Association and Principal and Accredited Specialist in Wills and Estates at Whyte Just and Moore lawyers.  An invitation to the Zoom meeting will be sent to members who RSVP ahead of the session. Given that most family lawyers are working from home without face to face contact with clients and other practitioners, the Zoom meeting will allow family lawyers to interact about current issues within the family law jurisdiction. The Zoom meeting is a free event and is designed for family lawyers to remain in contact during this period.   The session will go for approximately 40 minutes and will be hosted by Rohan Kelly, Committee Member of the Geelong Law Association and Family Lawyer at Harwood Andrews.  An invitation to the Zoom meeting will be sent to members who RSVP ahead of the session.   All aspects of Family Law will be up for discussion, including parenting arrangements, the reliability of valuation reports, witnessing documents and the changes to court hearings in the Federal Circuit Court and the Family Court of Australia.   The GLA is also planning to hold further events for other practice areas.  If you are not a Family lawyer but would be interested in a session for members of your practice area, please don't hesitate to get in touch with the Committee to make a suggestion. Dear Members The current Committee of the Geelong Law Association (GLA) is pleased to provide you with this Notice of the GLA’s Annual General Meeting 2020 (AGM). This year’s AGM will be held as a Zoom conference at 1.00pm on Friday 15 May 2020, given the continuation of restrictions on gatherings as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Please RSVP by 12 May 2020 to this event to receive a link to the Zoom meeting and associated instructions. We are hopeful these steps will ensure an efficient meeting for all members. The Committee looks forward to reinstating an updated calendar of events once the restrictions in place are lifted. The second GLA CPD Seminar for 2020 will be delivered by Fyona Livingstone-Clark and Madeleine Sargent of Foley's List.  Fyona appears for both prosecution and defence in a wide range of matters in the Children's Court, Magistrates' Court, County Court, Supreme Court, and in the Court of Appeal. Madeleine is a Reader at the Victorian Bar after and joins the Bar from the Office of Public Prosecutions, Victoria. The seminar will focus on the topic of "Getting the best result for your client: Indictable offences triable summarily, summary jurisdiction applications and establishing 'special reasons' to avoid minimum non-parole periods in the County Court."  Further details about the speakers and topic will follow in a flyer to be published next week. The seminar will be delivered at WorkSafe, 1 Malop Street Geelong (‘Town Hall’ Room 2.06 & 2.07) and the cost for members is be $20.00 which includes lunch.
