Attached is your invitation to our March CPD by Allana Gorldsworthy and Pat Karnis on Negotiation and Mediation tips. This is your last chance to get a CPD before the cut off date. Allana has extensive legal experience and since coming to the bar has concentrated on Family law. Allana qualified as a mediator in 1994 and has conducted many mediations. She has acted as mediator in family law, de facto matters and court referred matters. Pat has worked as a family lawyer in all aspects of family law and is now at the bar, As part of her practice Pat has participated in mediation and conciliation and has established a reputation for assisting clients to reach agreement in highly conflictual circumstances and for sound strategic advice. Attached is your invitation to the GLA first CPD for the year, our February CPD by Dr Sharon Keeling on Drawing and Assessing Particulars of Special Damages. Sharon has a wealth of knowledge having practiced at The Victorian Bar since 2004 in medical negligence, administrative law (in particular applications for judicial review of determinations of medical panels), product liability, public liability and health profession-related disciplinary proceedings in the superior courts, in the Coroners Court of Victoria and in disciplinary matters regarding health professionals in VCAT. She has significant training and experience in medicine in paediatrics and clinical genetics. Please note there is a new venue for this years CPD events. The GLA Committee are pleased to announce this year’s annual dinner will be held at the delightful Barwon Edge Boathouse. The annual dinner continues to be a successful event, giving members the opportunity to relax and unwind with their peers and celebrate the end of another year. Band: This year the GLA has secured a great band, ‘Unlimited’, who will provide wonderful entertainment and hopefully get everyone up dancing. Attached is your invitation to attend our final CPD session for the year, our November CPD by Pat Karnis on Mediation – reaching mutual agreement from points of conflict. Pat has a very broad knowledge in this area having come to the Bar in 2010 and prior to this Pat worked as a solicitor in a boutique family law firm. As a lawyer, Pat’s practice covered all aspects of family law. As part of her practice Pat has participated in mediation and conciliation and has established a reputation for assisting clients to reach agreement in highly conflictual circumstances and for sound strategic advice. Pat has experience in family law advocacy having appeared in property & children’s matters, recovery proceedings, relocation proceedings, divorce proceedings, appeals and is a nationally accredited mediator. She has had an ongoing association with Deakin University for a number of years and currently consults there as a law tutor and lecturer. She has been a regular volunteer at the Barwon Community Legal Centre. October is Regional and Suburban Young Lawyers (RSYL) Month and the Geelong contingent is celebrating with a good old fashioned wine tour! Come along and enjoy some of the best wines our beautiful region has to offer.  We will be having lunch at the picturesque and renowned Oakdene Vineyards before heading to two other surprise destinations for further wine tastings. The GLA has kindly agreed to supply us with a shuttle bus for the day so you can leave the car at home. An informal dinner will be held after the event concludes in Geelong for anyone who wishes to attend.  Event Details: The aforementioned shuttle bus will depart from the Geelong Law Court / Geelong Train Station car park at 10:30AM sharp. Please aim to arrive by 10:15AM to ensure a timely departure. The bus will return to the Geelong Train Station at approximately 5:30PM.  The bus, lunch and wine tasting at Oakdene Vineyards is included in the ticket price. We recommend bringing some cash on the day for wine purchases and/or wine tastings at the surprise destinations. Please note that there are limited tickets (57 people max) so make sure you book early. More and more organisations are recognising that supporting the whole person is the key to an engaged and resilient workforce or group. Yoga and mindfulness can improve: concentration, confidence and focus emotional and physical wellness mental resilience and stress management ability to manage work relationships. They can be particularly helpful for people working in emergency response, or other stressful situations.

The Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2002 is a technical regime which requires strict compliance to enforce contractors’ rights to payment and strict timeframes for principals’ to protect their own interests in relation to payments. It is an interim payment regime that sits outside the contract and applies to all commercial construction projects and some domestic construction, depending on the nature of the owner. This presentation will explore the steps each party must follow to enforce or defend claims for payment.
