STEP July Lunchtime CPD: I want it now! Parents making before death provision for children

Dear GLA members, We are pleased to welcome members to attend an in-person lunchtime CPD session kindly supported by STEP Australia - the Society of Trusts & Estates Practitioners. The session will be hosted by Bryan Mitchell TEP FTI, the managing director of Mitchells Solicitors (Brisbane) and Chair of STEP Australia.  Byran is an Accredited Specialist in Succession Law (wills & estates) and he and his firm are recognised in Doyle's Guide as leaders nationally in Estate Planning and Estate Litigation.  The session will is titled I want it now! Parents making before death provision for children - and will cover loans versus gifts, how to ensure a loan is repaid if the child divorces, and estate planning challenges.   The seminar will be delivered as a hybrid event, via Zoom and in person at Deakin University Waterfront Campus, in the Council Chambers room in the Geelong Commerce Centre.   In Person Attendance Members attending in-person will have lunch provided free of charge, sponsored by STEP Australia.   Please purchase your free ticket via Tidy HQ for the event before 12.00pm Wednesday, 26 July 2022 which also provides an RSVP so that numbers can be calculated for catering purposes. GLA July Lunchtime CPD: How to Challenge Tax Decisions

Dear GLA members, Together with Foley's List, we are pleased to invite you to our July CPD by Mark Gioskos on How to Challenge Tax Decisions. Mark Gioskos practises in taxation law, commercial law, public and administrative law, and equity and trusts. Mark comes to the Bar with a decade of experience practising as a solicitor, most recently as a special counsel at Thomson Greer. During that time, he advised in a variety of taxation and commercial disputes, representing government agencies, listed and multinational groups, small and medium-sized enterprises, high net worth families, and not-for-profit organisations. He is experienced in every stage of engagement with revenue authorities, from review and audit through to tribunal and court proceedings. The session is titled How to Challenge Tax Decisions - and will provide a walk-through of key tax litigation stages including assessment, objection, appeal and debt recover powers. The seminar will also be delivered as a hybrid event, via Teams and in person at WorkSafe Head Office, 1 Malop Street Geelong. The cost for this CPD session for members attending in person will be $20.00 which includes lunch. This year’s AGM will be held at ALMA Restaurant (located at 93-95 Ryrie Street, Geelong VIC 3220) at 12:30pm on Thursday, 31 March 2022. The GLA Committee are pleased to announce this year’s annual dinner will be held at The Yot who have recently opened as part of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club.  Although we were unable to host the annual dinner last year it continues to be a successful event, giving members the opportunity to relax and unwind with their peers and celebrate the end of another year. Entertainment: There will be live music on the night which will no doubt provide wonderful entertainment and hopefully get everyone up dancing.  Dress code: This year's dress code is cocktail. Dinner:  This year's Dinner will consist of a three course meal with canapes and a limited bar tab for drinks will also be provided on the night. Please ensure you enter any dietary requirements when purchasing your tickets. Venue: Guests will be required to comply with any current Government directions applicable at the time including evidence of vaccination status or applicable exemptions at the time. Be sure to get your tickets early as this event is one not to be missed. Ticket sales will close on the 10th of November 2021 so be sure to book as soon as possible.  We look forward to seeing you there.

The sixth session of the annual GLA Deakin Day will be hosted by Marlene Ebejer of Ebejer and Associates, who will return to Deakin Day to give her annual presentation about lawyers ethics.   This session was postponed from the main Deakin Day event and will be held Wednesday, 17 November 2021.
